My Story
I left India at the age of 15 to study in the UK. My final years of schooling and university education were in Newcastle in the north of England. Following this, I completed my medical and surgical training in various hospitals across the UK, and worked for my last years of training at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) in Glasgow. At the completion of my training, I was appointed Consultant in Pancreatic Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
During my surgical training at the GRI, I worked extensively with colorectal cancers, upper GI cancers and pancreatic cancers. I found pancreatic cancer to be the most challenging aspect of my surgical practice and therefore spent one year exclusively in pancreatic cancer surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, training with one of the most renowned pancreatic surgeons in the world today.
Returning Home to Kolkata
Early on in my sojourn in the UK, I realised that I wished to return home to Kolkata. The prosperity and opulence of the west is beyond compare, but prosperity alone does not bring happiness – the one place I have felt at home is in my own country. I wished to bring the skills I had acquired in the best centres in the world back to my roots.
Bringing World-Class Care to Kolkata
I wished to bring the skills I had acquired in the best centres in the world back to my roots so that we may also aspire to the level of care that I had become used to in Britain.
- 01 — Treating patients as human beings is more important than treating them as broken machines.
- 02 — The truth is often the most precious gift a doctor can offer a patient.
- 03 — Pointless investigations and treatments do not benefit either the patient or the doctor.
Honesty, Empathy and Informed Decisions
Surgery is a field fraught with complications and mishaps. Cancer surgery, in particular, is often risky with uncertain outcomes. I do not believe in minimising the risks or guaranteeing outcomes to my patients.
I believe that honestly empathising with my patients and telling them the truth about the disease and the potential pitfalls is an essential part of what makes me a good doctor.
Bringing Specialist Care Closer to Home
I currently work at Balananda Brahmachari Hospital in Behala. This is a charitable institution where I feel I can offer the level of care and attention that my patients deserve for a price that is affordable — aiming to provide a service that is better than the exclusive corporate hospitals for a fraction of the price.
I hope to bring the super-specialty cancer service to the common man and deliver the level of care I have come to expect from the best centres in the world.
