ERCP Patient Information Sheets

ERCP Treatment

Understanding Your Condition. Choosing the Right Treatment.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a highly precise diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to treat blockages in the bile and pancreatic ducts. Combining leading-edge clinical equipment with a patient-first approach, Dr. Maitra provides targeted intervention to alleviate symptoms and address pancreaticobiliary conditions effectively.

What is ERCP?

ERCP combines endoscopy and specialised imaging techniques to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile and pancreatic ducts. By utilizing high-definition visual guidance, specialists can intervene directly during the evaluation, offering a highly precise pathway to effective treatment.

Identify abnormalities

Manage stones

Address obstruction

Investigate jaundice

Manage pancreatic problems

Assist treatment

The suitability of ERCP depends on individual assessment. Please consult with your medical specialist to discuss your diagnostic options and clinical history.

When Might ERCP Be Considered?

An Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized medical procedure performed to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile and pancreatic ducts. Your specialist may recommend an ERCP if you present with any of the following clinical conditions.

Jaundice

Yellowing of the eyes and skin due to biliary obstruction, leading to a critical backup of bile pigments.

Bile Duct Stones

Gallstones migrating from the gallbladder into the common bile duct, causing severe biliary colic and infection risk.

Bile Duct Obstruction

Narrowing or blockage of the drainage system due to inflammation, postoperative strictures, or cellular trauma.

Pancreatic Cancer

Diagnostic stenting, biopsy, and evaluation of tumor compression in the pancreatic ductal system to relieve patient symptoms.

Recurrent Biliary Problems

Investigating unexplained, persistent symptoms of the biliary tract after gallbladder removal (post-cholecystectomy syndrome).

If you have been advised to undergo ERCP, our world-class medical team is here to guide you through every stage of this clinical procedure with precision, care, and safety.

Why Specialist Assessment Matters

HPB (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary) conditions involve highly complex anatomical pathways. Proper, early-stage assessment by a highly specialized consultant is crucial for navigating severe pancreatic and biliary tract issues safely.

An accurate specialist workup bypasses generic care delays and reduces diagnostic overlap. Through targeted reviews of complex pancreatic pathology, patients secure a precise timeline for specialized therapeutic procedures, leading to more favorable clinical outcomes.

HPB Training & Credentials

Dr. Maitra's HPB training includes an international fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, and his career also includes consultant pancreatic surgery experience in Glasgow.

Understanding Your ERCP

Every endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedure is planned with meticulous clinical care. We believe clinical preparation, precision assessment, and clear communication form the cornerstone of patient safety.

01

Specialist Assessment

A comprehensive review of your overall health history, surgical background, and anesthetic compatibility to minimize any procedural risk factors.

02

Understanding the Indication

We identify the exact physiological indicators—such as localized biliary obstructions, bile duct stones, or strictures—to guide the procedure effectively.

03

Discussing appropriate Treatment

Before the procedure, we clarify conscious sedation choices, treatment alternatives, potential clinical pathways, and post-procedural care expectations.

Your Consultation

To deliver the highest standard of procedural safety, please bring a complete list of your symptoms, previous abdominal ultrasound/CT/MRI reports, and recent liver function blood test results to your consultation. We will thoroughly review these diagnostics to map out the safest, highly personalized medical strategy for you.

What is an ERCP procedure?

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an advanced, highly specialized procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and X-ray imaging. It is utilized by Dr. Maitra to specifically diagnose and treat complex conditions of the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreatic ducts.

Unlike purely diagnostic scans like MRI (MRCP) or CT, an ERCP is primarily a therapeutic tool. If Dr. Maitra identifies an issue during the visual assessment—such as a blockage, stricture, or stone—it can be treated immediately during the same session, reducing the need for open surgery.

Yes, the removal of common bile duct stones is one of the most common applications of ERCP. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the opening of the bile duct (sphincterotomy), and specialized baskets or balloons are guided through the endoscope to safely extract the stones.

Obstructive jaundice occurs when a tumor, stone, or stricture blocks the flow of bile from the liver to the intestine, causing bilirubin to build up. By clearing this block or placing a hollow plastic or metal stent to bypass it, ERCP restores normal bile drainage, rapidly resolving jaundice.

You can schedule a comprehensive evaluation by contacting Dr. Maitra's clinic directly or requesting an appointment online. Please bring any recent blood test results, ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI reports to your consultation to help us tailor your treatment plan.

Patients must fast (no food or liquids) for at least 6 to 8 hours prior to the procedure to ensure a clear view of the upper GI tract. You must inform our clinical team of all current medications, especially blood thinners or diabetes management, as these may need temporary adjustment. Since sedation is administered, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home.
